Check it out: World's longest drift record set?

One of our friends at Ford passes this along: Drift star Vaughn Gittin, Jr., attempted to break the Guiness record for the world's longest drift, which stood at 4,137 feet. Gittin took a 2010 Mustang (which is why Ford is excited about it) to the parking lot at Las Vegas Speedway, and went for it: 6,285 feet, and though it is unofficial so far, he's the new world champion. The honor ought to go to those rear tires, though.

Ricky Carmichael goes trucking in Atlanta

Motocross legend Ricky Carmichael, who lives near Tallahassee, has done well enough in his move to NASCAR that his team is entering him in this weekend's race in Atlanta, which had previously not been on his schedule.

He has been entered in the No. 4 Monster Energy/ KHI All-Stars team Chevrolet Silverado for Saturday’s American Commercial Lines 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Because of the on-track success for the No. 4 team in the first two races of the season, Kevin Harvick Inc. decided to enter Carmichael after an eighth-place finish at Auto Club Speedway in California. Carmichael has qualified sixth and third in his two career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts and is currently tied for 14th-place in driver’s point standings. After two races, Carmichael’s overall ‘driver rating,’ according to NASCAR Loop Stats, is eighth best in the Truck Series.

In the history of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), no other rider has won as many championships (15) and races (150), earning him the nickname the GOAT (Greatest of All-Time). Carmichael was a record five-time AMA “Rider of the Year.”

“This is like a home race for me,” said the 29-year old Carmichael.  “Atlanta was always great to me when I raced here in Supercross, and I cannot wait to get on track at Atlanta Motor Speedway. I appreciate Monster Energy and Kevin and DeLana (Harvick, team owners) for adding this race to my schedule.

“I learned so much in the race at California, I was anxious to race again as soon as I could to put all of that into action. I wanted to race again that day if they would have let me! I was scheduled to wait until Kansas (Speedway in April) for my next race, so I’m excited and grateful to have any track time I can get and run an extra race.”

Camaro to pace the Indy 500

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced it has selected the all-new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro to pace the 93rd running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 24, 2009. The Camaro Pace Car was unveiled during a ceremony at the IMS Hall of Fame Museum with IMS President and Chief Operating Officer Joie Chitwood, and Indianapolis 500 winners Johnny Rutherford, Al Unser Jr. and Eddie Cheever Jr.

“The Chevrolet Camaro first paced the Indianapolis 500 in 1967 with one of the most loved Pace Cars of all times, followed by the 1969 Indy 500 Camaro Pace Car with the hugger orange paint scheme,” Chitwood said. “Just 40 years after that car made its mark as a Pace Car favorite, we’re pleased to have Camaro return to the streets and to the track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to start our Centennial Era.”

2009 marks the fifth time the Chevrolet Camaro has been selected to pace the Indianapolis 500 (1967, 1969, 1982, 1993, 2009). It will be the 44th time a General Motors vehicle has paced “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” with 20 by a Chevrolet.

Powered by the 6.2-liter LS3 all-aluminum Chevy V-8, the all-new 2010 Camaro produces 426 horsepower at 5,900 rpm and 420 lb-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm. It features a Tremec six-speed manual transmission and 3.45 axle ratio.

No drivetrain or suspension modifications are required to prepare the Camaro for its Pace Car duties. The only modifications to the vehicle include a fully integrated strobe system, including a GM-designed custom light bar utilizing Whelen 500 series linear strobes.

The car carries a bold paint scheme for the Indianapolis 500, created by GM Design. The 2009 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car driver will be announced at a later date.
